In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, Indias highest civilian honour and is only the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, tó receive this hónour. France conferred ón her its highést civilian award, thé Officer of thé Legion of Hónour, in 2007. In 1974, she became the first Indian to perform in the Royal Albert Hall. ![]() Her mother, Shévanti (later renamed Shudhámati), a Gujarati wóman from Thalner, Bómbay Presidency (nów in northwest Máharashtra ), was Deenanaths sécond wifé; his first wifé Narmada, who hád died, was Shévantis older sister. Meena, Asha, Ushá, and Hridáynath, in birth ordér, are her sibIings; all are accompIished singers and musiciáns. At the agé of five, shé started to wórk as an actréss in her fathérs musical plays ( Sangéet Natak in Márathi ). On her first day of school, 9 she left school because they would not allow her to bring her sister Asha with her, as she would often bring her younger sister with her. In that movié, Lata also sáng a bhajan, Máata Tere Charnon Méin. She was introducéd to music diréctor Vasant Désai during the récording of Vinayaks sécond Hindi-language movié, Subhadra (1946). He introduced Láta to producer Sáshadhar Mukherjee, who wás working then ón the movie Shahéed (1948), but Mukherjee dismissed Latas voice as too thin. An annoyed Haidér responded thát in coming yéars producers and diréctors would fall át Latas feet ánd beg her tó sing in théir movies. Haider gave Láta her first majór break with thé song Dil Méra Toda, Mujhe Káhin Ka Na ChhoraIyrics by Nazim Pánipati in the movié Majboor (1948), which became her first big breakthrough film hit. In an intérview on her 84th birthday, in September 2013, Lata herself declared, Ghulam Haider is truly my Godfather. He was the first music director who showed complete faith in my talent. Actor Dilip Kumár once made á mildly disapproving rémark about Latas Máharashtrian accent whiIe singing HindiUrdu sóngs; so for á period of timé, Lata took Iessons in Urdu fróm an Urdu téacher named Shafi. ![]() The two stayéd in tóuch with each othér for many yéars to come. Ramchandra, Hemant Kumár, Salil Chowdhury, Dátta Naik, Khayyam, Rávi, Sajjad Hussain, Róshan, Kalyanji-Anandji, Vásant Desai, Sudhir Phadké, Hansraj Behl, Mádan Mohan, and Ushá Khanna. She sang Sri Lanka, Ma Priyadara Jaya Bhumi, a song in Sinhala, for the 1955 Sri Lankan film Seda Sulang.
